Quick answer: Nigerian nurses use OET mainly for the UK, and increasingly for Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The UK’s NMC wants 350 in Listening, Reading and Speaking with 300 in Writing, Nursing version, and it accepts OET at home, which matters enormously from Nigeria. Ireland wants three 350s and one 300 in a single sitting. Australia’s new numbers: 350, 360, 350, 360. The fee converts to more than half a million naira per attempt. The full map, the paperwork rule that saves months, and the traps are below.
You are a Nigerian nurse, and you do not need this page to tell you why you are leaving. The wards you trained on are emptying around you, and your seniors send photographs from Manchester and Dublin. What you need from this page is simpler and rarer: the honest version of the road. No agent’s sugar, no group chat’s 2019 rules, no guessing. Every regulator number below was read from the regulator’s own page, and the date is printed at the top.
The naira mathematics, read it before anything else
The OET fee is set in Australian dollars, not naira, so what you pay moves with the exchange rate. The full test is AU$587, which at the rate on 8 October 2026 is about 556,000 naira per attempt, more than half a million. Stop and feel that number. For most nurses at home, that is many months of salary. Families gather it. Some borrow it. Check the live fee and the live rate on the day you book, because both move.
And here is the brutal part. Candidates pay that fee two, three, four times, not because their English is weak, but because their material was old and their first attempt was casual. So this page’s first law is the fee’s law: you are a one attempt household. Prepare like one. One avoided retake pays for any preparation system in this industry several times over.
Where OET takes a Nigerian nurse
| Destination | Regulator | The English door |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom, the main road | NMC | Nursing version, 350 in Listening, Reading, Speaking, 300 in Writing. At home test accepted. Clubbing across two sittings within 12 months. Then CBT, and the OSCE after arrival. The full UK roadmap → OET for the UK |
| Ireland, the growing road | NMBI | 350 in any three sub tests, 300 in the fourth, Writing never below 300. One sitting only, no clubbing, no at home test. The Irish mercy explained → OET for Ireland |
| Australia | Ahpra | Tests from 23 April 2026: Listening 350, Reading 360, Writing 350, Speaking 360. Test centre only. Clubbing allowed, two full sittings within 12 months. The 360 ambush → OET for Australia |
| New Zealand | Nursing Council | 350 in Listening, Reading, Speaking, 300 in Writing. Scores over more than one sitting, within 12 months of the first. Test centre only. → OET for New Zealand |
Two rules for every door. One: your registration English and your visa English are separate doors owned by separate offices, and the UK visa door moved to B2 on 8 January 2026, which is set out in full on the UK page. Two: results live for two years. Now stop guessing about your own card. Enter your scores, pick your country, see the verdict with every rule shown. → the OET eligibility checker
Taking OET from Nigeria, and the rule that changes plans
The test runs at venues in Lagos and Abuja, on paper and on computer, and there is the at home option. Check the live venue list when you book, because it changes. And now read the line that decides destinations from Nigeria more than from almost anywhere else.
OET at home works for the UK route. Australia refuses it. New Zealand refuses it. Ireland refuses it. Think about what the at home option means here: no travel across the country, no fuel mathematics, no leave request for a test day, no venue lottery. If the UK is your door, and for most Nigerian nurses it is, the exam comes to your own room. That single rule is one more reason the UK stays Nigeria’s main road.
The paperwork rule that saves whole seasons
Here is the delay that breaks more Nigerian timelines than any failed sub-test: the verification. Your nursing council verification and the document work for the foreign regulator move slowly, sometimes many months, and most nurses only start it after clearing English. Then they sit at home, cleared and frozen, watching their two year validity burn. So write this rule where you study: start your council verification the same month you start English preparation. The paperwork and the preparation run in parallel lanes, and parallel lanes save seasons.
The four Nigerian traps
- The old files trap. The same recycled papers travel through the group chats until you remember the answers. At home you score well. In the hall you score 300. Half a million naira, gone. It was never your English. It was the material. → why students fail OET
- The agent trap. This wave created an industry of middlemen. Some are honest. Some sell dreams by the thousand. Here is the filter that costs nothing: any rule an agent quotes you, verify it on the regulator’s own page, or run your scores through the checker on this site, which prints the date it was verified. The regulator decides your life, not the agent’s poster. → the eligibility checker
- The casual first attempt trap. “Let me just write it once and see.” In naira, that sentence costs more than almost anywhere on earth. Never book to look. Book to clear, and only after the mocks say you are ready.
- The IELTS by default trap. The centre near you teaches IELTS, so you sit IELTS, and the band 7 Writing wall eats a year. You write handovers every shift. OET’s letter is your daily work in exam clothes. Decide with the comparison, not with the banner outside the nearest centre. → OET versus IELTS
The five step Nigeria plan
- Measure first. Free. Sit a Reading paper built on the real 2026 difficulty, under the clock. One honest hour before one naira leaves the family. → the free OET practice tests
- Pick the destination. Lock the target on paper. UK and New Zealand: 350, 350, 350, 300. Ireland: three 350s and a 300, one sitting. Australia: 350, 360, 350, 360.
- Start the council verification the same month. The parallel lanes rule. Paperwork moves while you study.
- Train on the systems, free, then clear the Clearance Mocks. Then book. The Grade B Equation for Reading. The Listening Grade Equation. The Criteria Map for Writing. The 9 Point Pattern for Speaking. → Reading · Listening · Writing · Speaking In my tracking across 1,100 students who completed the program and cleared the Clearance Mocks, 3 out of 4 cleared the real exam, verified by their result cards. Clear the mocks first. Then book.
- Book once. Clear once. Fly once. And when the badge is on your chest, send the story back, because the nurse behind you on this road needs it.

How this page was verified
The NMC, NMBI, Ahpra and Nursing Council of New Zealand rules on this page were each read from that body’s own page and re checked in October 2026. The fee comes from OET’s own support page, converted at the rate on 8 October 2026, and both the fee and the rate move, so check them on the day you book. The Lagos and Abuja venue list sits behind OET’s booking flow, which is why no venue list is printed here. The visa English level is the UK’s own rule, dated on the UK page rather than restated loosely here, and this page makes no other claim about any country’s immigration settings, because they change faster than regulators do. One line that never leaves: the checker predicts, the regulator decides.
