You already did the hard part once. You left home, landed in Riyadh or Dubai or Doha, and built a life on night duties and remittances. The Gulf gave you the salary. Now be honest about what it will not give you. The passport. The progression. The place where your children’s future is settled.
That is why you are reading this at 2 AM after a shift. Not because the Gulf failed you, but because it was always base camp, never the mountain. The trap that only Gulf nurses fall into
Every country has its trap, and yours is upside down.
Back home, an exam fee is the kind of money that makes a student prepare like a soldier. Gulf nurses tell me it does not feel that way here. The fee is easier to absorb, so it stings less, and that is exactly the danger. An affordable retake makes for a lazy preparation. I have watched Gulf nurses sit this exam four times, five times, casually, because they could, and burn two years of the timeline the fee was supposed to protect.
So hold this line instead. The fee is not the cost. The seasons are the cost. Prepare like the nurse back home who can only afford one attempt, and you will only need one attempt.

Two rules before any plan. One: your registration English and your visa English are separate doors owned by separate offices, and the UK visa door moved to B2 level in January 2026. Taking OET from the Gulf
The test runs at venues in the major Gulf cities, on paper and on computer. Open the live venue list and the current fee on OET’s own site the day you book, because that list moves and this page does not guess at it. Then read the line that changes plans.
OET at home works for the UK route. Australia refuses it. New Zealand refuses it. Ireland refuses it. Now think about what that means for your actual life. Getting a test day off, arranging the travel to a venue, matching the roster: for a shift worker that is its own small war. If your door is the UK, the war disappears. The exam comes to your room in Riyadh. For many Gulf nurses, that single rule decides the destination.

The NMC, NMBI, AHPRA and Nursing Council of New Zealand rules on this page were each read from that body’s own page, verified on 5 September 2026 and re-checked every quarter. Three things are deliberately not stated. This page does not name which Gulf cities hold a test venue, because OET’s venue list sits behind its booking flow and a nurse who books a flight on a guess pays for that guess. It prints no fee in riyals or dirhams, because the fee is set in Australian dollars and the rate moves. And it makes no claim about the licensing authorities of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman or Kuwait, whose English rules for your current job are a separate matter you should read on their own pages.
