Quick answer: for UK nursing registration the NMC wants the OET Nursing version with 350 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and 300 in Writing, and it accepts OET on paper, on computer and at home, with clubbing allowed across two sittings within 12 months. For doctors the GMC wants the OET Medicine version with 350 in all four sub-tests, in the same test, from your most recent sitting, with no clubbing. And the UK work visa carries its own separate English requirement, which moved to B2 on 8 January 2026. The full journey, the exact rules and the traps are below.
The UK is the number one destination I prepare students for, and it is also the destination with the most misquoted rules. Ask five academies about clubbing and you will hear five different windows. Ask about the at home test and you will hear guesses. So this page works differently: every rule below comes from the NMC’s, the GMC’s or gov.uk’s own pages, read on 2 September 2026, with the date printed above, and the checker applies these exact rules to your scores.
The two UK doors: nurse and doctor

Notice the UK advantage almost nobody tells you: the UK accepts OET at home. Australia refuses it, New Zealand refuses it, Ireland refuses it. For a nurse in a city with no test venue, the UK route can start from her own room.
The nurse’s journey, step by step
- English first. OET Nursing at the scores above, or IELTS. Deciding between the two? The honest comparison with the equivalence table is here. → OET or IELTS
- The CBT. The NMC’s computer based test of competence, taken at a test centre in your own country.
- The application. Qualifications, registration verification, and your OET result, which the NMC verifies through your candidate number. Give verification permission inside your myOET account before you apply, or the file waits.
- The job and the visa. And here is the rule that changed. Read the next section before you resign from anything.
- The OSCE. The practical exam, taken in the UK after you arrive. Then the PIN, and you are a UK nurse.
Registration English and visa English are two different doors
This is the one that catches people, and it got wider this year rather than narrower. Your OET certificate is what the NMC or the GMC reads. It is not automatically what the Home Office reads.
gov.uk requires level B2 for the Health and Care Worker visa. Someone who held that visa before 8 January 2026 and is applying to extend or update it needs B1, which is the old level. And the page names Secure English Language Test providers as the proof route. OET is not named among them on that page.
There are other ways to satisfy the visa requirement, a degree taught in English among them, and your own route depends on your nationality, your qualification and your circumstances. So the rule is not that your OET is worthless at the visa desk. The rule is that one certificate does not automatically open both doors, and the only page that can tell you which door yours opens is gov.uk on the day you apply.
The doctor’s journey, in short
OET Medicine with four Bs in one sitting opens the GMC’s English door, and the same certificate is needed before booking PLAB 1. Then PLAB 1, PLAB 2 in the UK, and registration with a licence to practise.
One warning that costs doctors months: the GMC reads only your most recent sitting. A doctor who scored four Bs, then re-sat hoping for As and dropped one sub-test, has replaced a passing certificate with a failing one. When you have the Bs, stop testing and apply.
Clubbing for UK nurses, the short version
Two full sittings within 12 months, counted from test dates rather than certificate dates. Across the two, one 350 in each of Listening, Reading and Speaking, and one 300 in Writing. And the floors: in every sitting, nothing below 300 in Listening, Reading and Speaking, nothing below 250 in Writing. Both sittings must include all four sub-tests, so a single sub-test booking cannot be clubbed. The four UK traps
- The two doors trap. Registration English and visa English are different rules owned by different offices, and the visa rule moved on 8 January 2026. Clear both doors on paper before you resign from anything.
- The C+ comfort trap. Writing at 300 sounds like relief, and then Writing is exactly where UK candidates fail, because comfort kills preparation. And in clubbing, a Writing score below 250 in either sitting breaks the whole combination.
- The version trap. The NMC expects the Nursing test, the GMC accepts only Medicine. A certificate with the wrong version is a beautiful, useless paper.
- The five academies trap. The NMC clubbing window is 12 months, extended from the old six, and half the internet still says six. When a rule is quoted to you, ask for the regulator’s page, or use the checker, which prints the date it was verified.

All three were read on 2 September 2026, and the date at the top of this page changes every time they are read again. When a rule moves, this page moves the same week, and so does the checker.
